NSW Industry Training Advisory Bodies & Industry Skills Councils
There are 18 Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs) in New South Wales that provide a range of advisory and consultancy services to RTOs (as well as government and employers) on the vocational training, skills and workforce development needs of specific industries. ITABs are the primary source of information and advice on training packages for RTOs.
The broad aim of the ITABs is to assist industry to achieve and maintain a workforce with the right levels and mix of skills to meet business goals. They are funded by the NSW Government and contracted by the NSW Department of Education and Training to support critical operational areas of the NSW vocational education and training (VET) system.
RTOs seeking information or advice about training packages should contact the relevant ITAB. Contact details are available at www.nswitabs.com.
More information is also available on the Department of Education and Training's Industry Programs website.
Industry Skills Councils
Industry Skills Councils (ISCs) collect information on training needs from industry employers, unions and industry professional associations in order to provide advice to government on what training is required within their industry.
The Commonwealth Government has an up-to-date contact list of ISCs.
Industry Advice
Industry experts provide advice to VETAB in a number of ways. These include accompanying an auditor to a training organisation’s site and advising whether equipment, materials, assessment methods or trainers’ qualifications meet the requirements of the Training Package qualification or accredited course.
There may be a checklist to be completed, and a report provided.

Another form of industry advice is when the expert visits the training organisation’s site before the organisation applies to VETAB for an amendment to scope or increase in student capacity.
