VETAB members
Members of the Board are appointed in accordance with Section 5 of the Vocational Education and Training Act 2005. Appointments to the Board are generally for three years.
The Board comprises 11 members:
- the Director, VETAB, and
- 10 part-time members appointed by the Minister for Education and Training. The Board usually meets six times a year.
Bert Evans, AO
DScEc(Hon)
Term expires: 27 December 2011. Chair of VETAB. Appointed to represent industry, commerce or industrial relations. Mr Evans is also Chair of the NSW Board of Vocational Education and Training.
Lyn Riley
Dip Teaching, Grad Dip Ed
Term expires: 27 December 2011. Ms Riley is an Aboriginal woman with both Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi heritage; she has extensive experience working in Aboriginal affairs in both academic and other arenas. Her involvement in education ranges across universities, VET and the school sectors. She is currently, a Senior Lecturer and Academic Co-ordinator of the Koori Centre, University of Sydney.
Ms Riley has been involved in conducting research into the development of new approaches to addressing Indigenous issues based on appropriate Indigenous learning and community consultation processes.
Ben Bardon
BA(Hon)
Term expires: 27 December 2011. Mr Bardon is CEO of Central West Group Apprentices a Group Training Company in NSW. Ben has worked in the Community Training sector since 1990 and has held a number of representative positions including Board membership of the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Council, National Employment Services Association Board, and the Group Training Australia Board and the NSW Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board.
Anthony Bohm
BEc
Term expires: 27 December 2011. Mr Bohm is currently the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Think: Education Group (www.think.edu.au). Mr Bohm has extensive experience working as a senior executive in the private education sector in Australia and the UK. Prior to joining Think: Education Group, Mr Bohm was Vice President, International Development of Kaplan Inc, one of the largest global private education companies in the world, based in London.
Mr Bohm is co-author of a number of seminal research publications in the international education field and is a member of the NSW State Committee of the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET).
Kevin Power, AM
DipAcc, FAIM
Term expires: 27 December 2011. Appointed to represent industry, commerce
or industrial relations. Mr Power is also a Member of the NSW Board of Vocational
Education and Training.
Paolo Totaro, AM
Dott Giurisp. DipMusic
Term expires: 27 December 2011. Appointed to represent the provision of vocational
education or training for students with special needs. Mr Totaro is also Foundation
Chairman of the Ethnic Affairs Commission of NSW, Foundation Director of the
Community Arts Australia Council and a Member of the NSW Board of Vocational
Education and Training. He is a former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Technology,
Sydney, and a former Commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission.
Catherine Chaffey
BA(Psych)
Term expires: 31 May 2010. Nominee of the Minister for Education and Training. Ms Chaffey is also Chief Executive Officer of the National Finance Industry Training Advisory Body.
Doug Wright AM
Term expires: 27 December 2011. Appointed to represent the provision or accreditation of vocational education
or training. Mr Wright is also a Member of the NSW TAFE Commission Board, a
Member of the National Quality Council, Consultant to the Australian Industry
Group, Director of the Hunter Valley Training Company, a Member of the Workcover
Authority Board and a Member of the Commonwealth Study Conference Executive.
Pam Christie
BA, DipEd, GradDip Adult Education
Term expires: 31 May 2010. Nominee of the NSW TAFE Commission Board. Ms Christie is also Institute Director of TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute.
Margaret Willis
BA, DipEd, DipMigT, DipContEd, MEd, MBA
Director, VETAB. Ms Willis is also Director, Quality Assurance Services, NSW Department of Education and Training.
David Collins

Nominee of the Minister for Education and Training. Mr Collins is also General Manager, State Training Services, NSW Department of Education and Training.
